After its hugely successful premier at MIFF 2015, Downriver has gone on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and win Best Picture at Miami + Fort Lauderdale LGBT Film Festival. The film will be released in June 2016 by Rialto Distribution.

Shot in Victoria in the Yarra Valley and Warrandyte by renowned cinematographer László Baranyai, this film has been a labour of love for Grant and Producer, Jannine Barnes, following collaborations between the two on award-winning short films Hurt’s Rescue and The Wilding.

Joining Grant for this session was lead actor, Reef Ireland:

“Reef Ireland had the role of James ever since we worked together with him in The Wilding. His outstanding performance in that short film affected the way I wrote his character the final few drafts of the script. I knew Reef was capable of nuance, could turn from brutal to tender on a dime. That is his strength, so I pushed that in the writing.” – Writer / Director, Grant Scicluna

Downriver has been a decade long project, and this session offered a tremendous opportunity to hear how perseverance and a successful collaboration have led to this stunningly beautiful debut.
