Designed for learners with little or no experience in video production, this course is an intensive, hands-on introduction to the fundamental skills required to make short films, focusing on the documentary genre. Learners develop and pitch documentary ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for a shoot, conduct interviews, record images and sound and edit footage into a short Documentary for a cinema screening. Practical workshops taught by current industry professionals have been designed to develop skills that learners can consolidate through the experience of devising and producing an independent documentary project. OPEN CHANNEL offers a learning environment that reflects industry practice while maintaining the highest educational standards. Commencement Dates 2008Certificate III in Screen - Television Production Course StructureThe Certificate III in Screen – Television Production is full-time (Monday to Thursday) taught over 14 weeks with a total of 336 contact hours. This course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills required to produce video content to be broadcast on television. Students work in groups to develop and pitch ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for location and studio shoots, cast presenters, direct recordings, record interviews, record images and sound and edit the footage. The first part of the course concentrates on program development of a 6 episode series for broadcast on C31, simultaneously gaining the technical skills and procedural knowledge needed to produce for television. Students will learn the skills required to use cameras, microphones and lights, both in the field and in the studio. In the second part of the course, small teams will extend their skills and knowledge to produce field-based video segments. These segments will be edited and inserted into the studio-based productions, which will be recorded in a live broadcast situation. Assessment occurs throughout the Nationally Recognised Training programs. Students will be assessed on their skills and knowledge by industry professionals, their peers and will also have opportunities for self-assessment. Student SupportEligible students enrolled in the Certificate III in Screen – Documentary Production and Television Production may apply for Youth Allowance / AUSTUDY/ ABSTUDY through their local Centrelink. Both course deliveries satisfy the criteria for assistance. People under employment case management programs may be eligible for government support in paying course fees. Contact your case manager for advice. OPEN CHANNEL offers fee installment options for courses over $3000. For further information refer to the Payment Plan policy and procedure (Training Homepage) or contact the Training Manager on: training@openchannel.org.au Entry RequirementsOPEN CHANNEL is underpinned by the principles of access and equity. OPEN CHANNEL does not tolerate discrimination on the basis of age, gender, sexuality, social or cultural background. The course is open to all Australian residents 18 years and over. There are no technical or skill-based prerequisites, however priority is given to applicants who demonstrate good communication skills, an active interest in film or television, industry experience and computer literacy. All applicants are interviewed. Once an application form is completed and a deposit is paid an interview time will be given. The interview is an opportunity to clarify any issues about Accredited Training at OPEN CHANNEL and to determine applicants’ suitability for enrolment. CostThe course fees for the course commencing 11 August 2008 are: Certificate III in Screen - Television Production: $5000 ($4200 before enrolment deadline), plus $500 refundable equipment bond. A $1000 course deposit is payable on enrolment to secure an interview, and fully refundable if you are not selected into the course. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognised Current Competency (RCC) Career OpportunitiesMany OPEN CHANNEL graduates are now working in the Australian film and television industry and others have chosen to go on to further study. Graduates are working as freelance camera operators, editors, as production assistants and crew on network productions, feature films and within the independent film community. Many have achieved entry to further tertiary level film and media courses at institutes including the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Pathway ProgramOPEN CHANNEL maintains a referral database for emerging crew and exceptional accredited graduates. This database is utilized by OPEN CHANNEL Productions and clients looking for crew members and is a valuable opportunity to continue building skills through industry experience. OPEN CHANNEL endeavors to prepare accredited students for the Victorian industry and continues supporting them through work experience opportunities and ongoing production advice.
