Certificate III in Screen (CUF30101) - Television Production

This course is nationally accredited training issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Youth Allowance/Austudy/ABSTUDY approved.

Channel 31Certificate III in Screen  - Television Production is an intensive practical course, delivered in conjunction with community broadcaster C31, focusing on skill development across a broad scope of broadcast television production positions, based on professional industry models.

The course will:

  • provide accredited training for people pursuing a career in film and television;
  • provide skills and knowledge to independently undertake all aspects of single camera documentary projects across a broad scope of skills in the stages of  development, production and post production;
  • promote professional work practices through project-based learning and networking opportunities.

Nationally Recognised Training

OPEN CHANNEL is a Registered Training Organisation, (RTO), authorised to deliver the nationally recognised training, Certificate III in Screen and Advanced Diploma of Screen.

Designed for learners with little or no experience in video production, this course is an intensive, hands-on introduction to the fundamental skills required to make short films, focusing on the documentary genre.  Learners develop and pitch documentary ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for a shoot, conduct interviews, record images and sound and edit footage into a short Documentary for a cinema screening. Practical workshops taught by current industry professionals have been designed to develop skills that learners can consolidate through the experience of devising and producing an independent documentary project.

OPEN CHANNEL offers a learning environment that reflects industry practice while maintaining the highest educational standards. Class sizes are kept small to maximise students' learning opportunities and interactions with tutors.

Course Structure

The Certificate III in Screen – Television Production is full-time (Monday to Thursday) taught over 14 weeks with a total of 336 contact hours.

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills required to produce video content to be broadcast on television. Students work in groups to develop and pitch ideas, research and write scripts, plan and prepare for location and studio shoots, cast presenters, direct recordings, record interviews, record images and sound and edit the footage.

The first part of the course concentrates on program development of a 6 episode series for broadcast on C31, simultaneously gaining the technical skills and procedural knowledge needed to produce for television. Students will learn the skills required to use cameras, microphones and lights, both in the field and in the studio. In the second part of the course, small teams will extend their skills and knowledge to produce field-based video segments. These segments will be edited and inserted into the studio-based productions, which will be recorded in a live broadcast situation.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to access, increase and update knowledge of the film, television, radio and multimedia industry, including the role of different industry sectors, and the impacts of changing technology. This knowledge underpins effective performance in all sectors.

CUFSAF01A Follow health, safety and security procedures
This unit describes the skills and knowledge which everyone in the workplace must have in order to work safely. It covers a range of industry contexts involving a variety of different conditions and hazards.

CUFPOP05A Book and coordinate production resources
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to book and coordinate production resources for any production within the cultural industries.

CUFPOP04A Compile a daily production schedule/running sheet
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to produce a daily production schedule/running sheet for any production within the cultural industries.

CUFBRD03A Capture broadcast material on tape for television transmission
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate video recording devices to capture television broadcast material from a range of sources in preparation for editing and re-transmission at a later date.

CUFBRD09A Call shots and cue sources for a television production
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist the television producer / director for a live to air, live to tape or pre-recorded television production.

This Unit describes the skills and knowledge required to protect creative work and performance from unauthorized use.

CUFEDT05A Operate a non-linear editing system
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a non-linear editing system for the editing of digital media for any screen based production. Film and/or video may have been used in the production phase and digitised for the editing process.

CUFSET03A Make Sets for the Screen
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret set construction schedules and specifications, and to produce sets for any production within the cultural industries.

CUFCAM01A Set up and operate a basic video camera
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set up and operate a basic video camera and equipment for use in small media productions which may not be intended for commercial sale.

CUSSOU04A Record Sound
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to record sound, using a variety of digital and analogue recording equipment in a studio or on location for a production in the cultural industries.

Assessment

OPEN CHANNEL is committed to providing students with assessment opportunities that are valid, reliable, flexible and fair. Assessment occurs throughout the Nationally Recognised Training programs. Students will be assessed on their skills and knowledge by industry professionals, their peers and will also have opportunities for self-assessment.  Assessment is based on units of competency taken from the Film, Television and Multimedia Training Package.

Student Support

Eligible students enrolled in the Certificate III in Screen – Documentary Production and Television Production may apply for Youth Allowance / AUSTUDY/ ABSTUDY through their local Centrelink. Both course deliveries satisfy the criteria for assistance.

People under employment case management programs may be eligible for government support in paying course fees. Contact your case manager for advice.

Entry Requirements

OPEN CHANNEL is underpinned by the principles of access and equity. OPEN CHANNEL does not tolerate discrimination on the basis of age, gender, sexuality, social or cultural background.

The course is open to all Australian residents 18 years and over. There are no technical or skill-based prerequisites, however priority is given to applicants who demonstrate good communication skills, an active interest in film or television, industry experience and computer literacy. All applicants are interviewed.

Once an application form is completed and a deposit is paid an interview time will be given. The interview is an opportunity to clarify any issues about Accredited Training at OPEN CHANNEL and to determine applicants’ suitability for enrolment.

Cost

The course fees for the course commencing 11 August 2008 are:

Certificate III in Screen - Television Production: $5000 ($4200 before enrolment deadline), plus $500 refundable equipment bond.

A $1000 course deposit is payable on enrolment to secure an interview, and fully refundable if you are not selected into the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognised Current Competency (RCC)
Prior to commencement of courses, applicants can request to be formally assessed on their existing knowledge. This assessment will comprise of a Self Assessment Questionnaire, followed by an interview and feedback session. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognised Current Competency (RCC) assessments incur additional fees.

OPEN CHANNEL recognises the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Registered Training Organisation.

Career Opportunities

Many OPEN CHANNEL graduates are now working in the Australian film and television industry and others have chosen to go on to further study.

Graduates are working as freelance camera operators, editors, as production assistants and crew on network productions, feature films and within the independent film community.

Many have achieved entry to further tertiary level film and media courses at institutes including the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).

Pathway Program

OPEN CHANNEL maintains a referral database for emerging crew and exceptional accredited graduates.  This database is utilized by OPEN CHANNEL Productions and clients looking for crew members and is a valuable opportunity to continue building skills through industry experience.

OPEN CHANNEL endeavors to prepare accredited students for the Victorian industry and continues supporting them through work experience opportunities and ongoing production advice.
