Before you shoot, think about what's happening in the background.
Production Design encompasses the entire 'look' of your production, and is as important a part of storytelling as sound and vision. Production Design legend Julie (former Head of Design, ABC TV) will take you will take you through the fundamentals of the craft and give you a practical understanding of Production Design for all forms of screen media.
In this course you will learn how to:
- Breakdown script for art department
- Buy props
- Create budget estimations
- Pitch your concepts to the Director
- Understand the subtleties of period dressing
- Dress and break-down sets
- Work with teams such as costume, make-up and special effects
- Build a career in this role

An ideal beginning for anyone interested in film design; including the many crew roles in costume, sets, production, make up and props departments. This is also the perfect course for producers and directors interested in understanding the complex world of film design.

Tutors
JULIE BELLE
Julie has worked in the film and television design business since1976. Her work covered a wide variety of productions, though her expertise is concentrated in the drama production area. She has worked both in Australia as well as overseas as a designer and art director. She trained and worked as a designer in Sydney, at the ABC, where she became Head of Design in the early nineties. In 1995, Julie resumed her work as a senior production designer, and moved to Melbourne for a six month long production. After leaving the ABC in late 1996, she freelanced in Melbourne as a production designer and designed a children’s drama series and many television commercials both for local and overseas production companies. Since 2001, Julie has been teaching interior design and screen design in Melbourne. In 2009 Julie will visit the UK and USA on an international fellowship to look at the latest models in training for the Art Department being used around the world.
