Documentary Cinematography is a unique challenge. Unpredictable situations must be captured; their meaning communicated. This course provides new Documentary Cinematographers with essential technical, creative and theoretical approaches to factual film.

The course covers:

  • Shooting styles and approaches
  • Composition, exposure and movement
  • Choosing cameras and formats
  • Shooting for meaning and honing your instincts
  • Interview set ups
  • Using lighting and available light

David Hawkins

Dave is a graduate of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School, and has worked as a cinematographer extensively in Melbourne and Sydney on projects ranging from feature film, television commercials and short films to music videos and documentaries. The projects he has filmed have gained awards and recognition in Australia and Internationally. He was Director of Photography on short film 'The Saviour' which was Academy Award (Oscar) nominated in 2007 for Best Live Action Short Film. With his theoretical and practical based knowledge of both film and video cinematography, as well as lighting, grips and team management, David has been lecturing in film production at Open Channel and SAE Institute.
