OC2 Producing Foundation Workshop: PRODUCE IT

OC2 is OPEN CHANNEL’s Advanced Diploma of Screen program (CUF60101), developing new independent feature film projects.

Participants completing an OC2 Foundation Workshop may apply to the OC2 Extension Program to complete an Advanced Diploma of Screen. The extension program involves working in the capacity of Writer, Director or Producer during the making and marketing of a teaser film for an independent feature project.

This workshop will:

  • provide accredited training for people pursuing a career in film and television producing
  • provide skills and knowledge to develop producing skills and knowledge which comply with Australian film & television industry standards
  • provide skills and knowledge to independently budget, schedule and obtain sponsorship for short or feature films
  • provide mentorship through the process of budgeting, scheduling and obtaining sponsorship for a film
  • aim to support students to further develop their projects on completion of the course.

About Produce IT

OPEN CHANNEL's innovative new Advanced Diploma program OC2 offers students the chance to learn while working on their own independent drama or comedy project for film or TV. Whether working independently or as part of team, this unique blend of training and production support will give your project a kick start.

The Producing Foundation Workshop Produce IT involves completing OPEN CHANNEL’s Producing and Production Management short course, as well as an additional one-day Obtaining Sponsorship seminar. The Workshop also includes three individual mentorship sessions with an experienced Producer.

New Producers will explore the working tools of the independent Feature or TV Series project, including a complete budget and schedule. Experienced Producers will guide you as you seek sponsorship for your project and begin to make your film a reality.

The Produce IT Workshop is designed to advance students’ existing producing skills and their understanding of screen business, as well as the presentation and packaging of films to financiers, funding bodies and networks. Students will acquire the following skills: packaging & financing, budgeting, scheduling, management of cast and crew obligations, film accounting, taxation, insurance and distribution, along with how to go about obtaining sponsorship - and get qualified in the process!

Produce IT Foundation Workshop utilises four units from the Advanced Diploma of Screen (CUF60101), selected from the Film, Television, Radio & Multimedia Industry Package CUF01.

Upon completion of the Produce IT Workshop, students will be encouraged to further develop their projects and participate in the Teaser Production Initiative.

OPEN CHANNEL offers a learning environment that reflects industry practice while maintaining the highest educational standards. Class sizes are kept small to maximise students' learning opportunities and interactions with tutors.

Course Structure

The OC2 Producing Foundation Workshop – Produce IT is part time over 5 months including the following components;

* Producing and Production Management (Short course)
* Obtaining Sponsorship Seminar (Show Me the Money – 28 June)
* 3 Production Advisory Sessions
* 3 hour RPL Assessment Interview

This workshop is designed for people who wish to pursue a career in producing for film. The minimum entrance requirement for the course is "Certificate III in Screen" or equivalent producing or filmmaking experience. It provides an opportunity to learn in a practical training environment with leading industry professionals.

The Produce IT Workshop requires students to first complete OPEN CHANNEL’s Producing and Production Management short course and Show Me the Money – Obtaining Sponsorship Seminar.

Stage Two of the Workshop then entails completion of the RPL kit, supported by the Accredited Training Coordinator and 3 production advisory sessions with a mentor.

Stage Three is the assessment of the RPL kit and interview with the Accredited Training Coordinator and an independent producer.

Upon completion of the Produce It workshop, students will be encouraged to further develop their projects and participate in the “Teaser Production Initiative”.

Description of units undertaken in OC2 Foundation Workshop – Produce It:
Produce It Foundation Workshop utilises four units from the Advanced Diploma of Screen (CUF60101).  Selected from the Film, Television, Radio & Multimedia Industry Package CUF01. Endorsed by the National Training Quality Committee 2004.

Units include:

CUEFIN1A Develop a Budget
This unit refers to the preparation of the budget and reports related to the financing and financial management of a project/operation within the cultural industries.

  • Plan the budget
  • Develop and finalise budget
  • Prepare reports for key personnel
  • Prepare budget for presentation

CUFPOP03A Compile a Production Schedule
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and compile a production schedule which identifies all required resources and timelines for the completion of all stages of a production within the cultural industries.

  • Identify the resources required to meet the creative brief
  • Compile the production schedule
  • Agree to and distribute the production schedule

CUSGEN05A Make Presentations
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to make effective presentations for many different purposes using a range of media.

  • Plan and prepare for the presentation
  • Make presentation
  • Evaluate presentation

CUEFIN3B Obtain Sponsorship
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to obtain and manage sponsorship for an activity, event or organisation. As such the unit may focus on 'one-off' sponsorship arrangements or ongoing activities within an organisation. The unit requires a sound knowledge of sponsorship opportunities and protocols in a given industry context plus a range of communication, negotiation and management skills.

Assessment

OPEN CHANNEL is committed to providing students with assessment opportunities that are valid, reliable, flexible and fair. Assessment occurs throughout the Nationally Recognised Training programs. Students will be assessed on their skills and knowledge by industry professionals, their peers and will also have opportunities for self-assessment.  Assessment is based on units of competency taken from the Film, Television and Multimedia Training Package.
Students will be required to provide evidence, within duration of the workshop that demonstrates a high level of skills as a Producer, including preparation of:

  • a full budget
  • schedule
  • funding application and sponsorship agreement for a short film or teaser project.

Student Support

Eligible students enrolled in the Certificate III in Screen – Documentary Production and Television Production may apply for Youth Allowance / AUSTUDY/ ABSTUDY through their local Centrelink. Both course deliveries satisfy the criteria for assistance.

People under employment case management programs may be eligible for government support in paying course fees. Contact your case manager for advice.

Entry Requirements

OPEN CHANNEL is underpinned by the principles of access and equity. OPEN CHANNEL does not tolerate discrimination on the basis of age, gender, sexuality, social or cultural background.

This workshop is open to all Australian residents 18 years and over.  Applicants must have completed a Certificate III in Screen qualification or have equivalent filmmaking experience.

All applicants are interviewed.

Once an application form is completed and a deposit is paid an interview time will be given. The interview is an opportunity to clarify any issues about Accredited Training at OPEN CHANNEL and to determine applicants’ suitability for enrolment.

Cost

The course fees for the 2008 Producing Foundation Workshops are:

Produce It: $890 (Inclusive of all courses, seminars and assessment).

The full course fees are payable on enrolment to secure an interview, and fully refundable if you are not selected for the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognised Current Competency (RCC)
Prior to commencement of courses, applicants can request to be formally assessed on their existing knowledge. This assessment will comprise of a Self Assessment Questionnaire, followed by an interview and feedback session. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognised Current Competency (RCC) assessments incur additional fees.

OPEN CHANNEL recognises the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Registered Training Organisation.

Career Opportunities

Many OPEN CHANNEL graduates are now working in the Australian film and television industry and others have chosen to go on to further study.

Graduates are working as freelancers, assistants and crew on network productions and within the independent film community.

Many have achieved entry to further tertiary level film and media courses at institutes including the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), etc.

Pathway Program

OPEN CHANNEL maintains a referral database for emerging crew and exceptional accredited graduates.  This database is utilized by OPEN CHANNEL Productions and clients looking for crew members and is a valuable opportunity to continue building skills through industry experience.

OPEN CHANNEL endeavors to prepare accredited students for the Victorian industry and continues supporting them through work experience opportunities and ongoing production advice.
