Talking Docklands
OPEN CHANNEL, in association with City of Melbourne and Portable Content, is combining community story-telling and portable movies in a new project for a new suburb. TALKING DOCKLANDS focuses on the stories of people that live and work in suburb 3008.
TALKING DOCKLANDS showcases the personal tales of the residents of this developing Melbourne suburb. Whether it is a social commentary told from a historical perspective, immersed deep within the rich maritime history of the area or from the viewpoint of its latest inner-city dwellers, TALKING DOCKLANDS examines the changing face of one of Melbourne’s most innovative pieces of land, and is done so by 8 exciting new storytellers.
Witness Brian Tanti, curator of the Fox Classic Car Museum at the historic Queens Warehouse. Brian knew the building when it was a mint and a military storage space.
Listen to Ted Fowler’s account of being a wharfie in the 1940-50’s, or Rev. Guy Mason who runs his sermon in the Docklands James Squire Pub.
Ojas Viosli is a middle-aged Docklands resident. Trained in architecture. Ojas has made an intellectual film about the sociology of the Docklands. Sarah van Oosterom is a mid-20's Docklands resident. A media arts graduate. Sarah lives on a boat.
Be intrigued by Camilla Orr-Thomson’s documentation of the colourful personalities who surround her in the Docklands community. The local milkbar owner, the bouncer, the Turkish belly dancer.
TALKING DOCKLANDS invites you to witness these eight filmmakers showcase their films in an intimate setting. Armed with only a video camera or mobile camera phone and their idea of what Docklands means to them, the participants were given basic training in documentary filmmaking and how to write a script. From this point what you will now see is real people telling real stories about their loved precinct.
TALKING DOCKLANDS is designed to inform and document this embryonic city within a city, and will be a testament to Dockland's unique past, present and future!
