Writer, filmmaker and musician Agatha Yim with her story about being a 'banana' in Australia ie. white on the inside, Asian on the outside, has taken out the 2008 Short & Sharp Pitching Competition, presented by Open Channel in association with the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF), and generously supported by Film Victoria.

It was a great night at ACMI on Wednesday 4 June, as 8 finalists each presented a short film pitch with a human rights message in front of an audience and judges Sue Maslin, Alkinos Tsilimidos, Ewan Burnett and Ian Dixon. The judges were impressed by the diversity and strength of the presentations which did not make their final decision an easy one. There were two Special Commendations - Caro Macdonald for ROEBOURNE OUR HOME and Jemma van Loenen for BEYOND BLACK & WHITE. All the pitches were entertaining, sad, funny, thought-provoking.

This competition is one of the few that offers emerging filmmakers the opportunity to pitch - for most of the participants the Competition was the first time they had presented a pitch. It's a great learning experience for both the audience and participants, not only about pitching techniques, but about story development, content, character development, story focus, authenticity, originality.

Open Channel thanks the judges, the finalists, and the entrants - there was a high standard of entries, and all were worthy of a chance to pitch.

Look out for the screening of Agatha's completed film in November at the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival.
