It is on Friday night that life in Coober Pedy is temporarily transformed. As the sun sets over the desert town with its dusty plains and cave homes, locals gather at the Coober Pedy Speedway. With beer and steak-sandwiches in hand, they watch family and neighbourly battles for fastest on the circuit. For a few brief hours speed dominates over the daily grind for opal and tourism dollar.
