ABOUT THE COURSE

The 1st Assistant Director (1st AD) is in charge of running the set. The Assistant Directing team supports the 1st AD with other set management roles. Learn how to perform the 1st AD role and how to work within the Assistant Directing Department in this intensive industry-focused course, endorsed by the Australian Directors Guild.

The 1st AD creates the schedule, manages the set, makes sure work is performed in a timely and efficient manner, and ensures that everyone is informed as to what’s happening—with the goal of getting all the day’s scheduled work accomplished. Often misinterpreted as the “fun police” or “Sergeant Major” the Assistant Directors are critical to the mood and smooth running of any shoot.

This course, taught by leading industry Assistant Director TONI RAYNES provides a thorough insight into the roles and responsibilities of the 1st Assistant Director and other roles in the Assistant Directing team. Learn what an AD must do, what an AD should do, and even some things an AD probably shouldn’t do!

In addition to developing your skills as an emerging 1st AD, the course can give you the skills to forge a career in the Assistant Directing department on professional film or television productions, where you can seek work as a 3rd or 4th AD.

The course is also useful for other emerging film crew wanting a better general understanding of how to work within the practical constraints of production.
